As a young Black woman, Sonya Massey was and should continue to be a beloved friend, mother, and daughter. Sonya called the police because she thought there could be an intruder.

No matter who we are or where we live, all Americans should be able to seek for help without fear of losing our lives.
The fact that Sonya was killed by a responding police officer should serve as a reminder that Black Americans, more than most of us, often worry about their safety.
Justice should be served to Sonya’s family. I am very touched by the unthinkable and horrible tragedy that her children and her whole family are going through.
Jill and I are in grief, as is the country, and at this terrible time, our prayers and thoughts are with Sonya’s family, friends, and community.
I commend the Springfield office of the State’s Attorney for their timely action. While we wait for the issue to be pursued, let’s pray for comfort for the grieving.
Congress should ratify the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act at this time. Our fundamental commitment to justice is at risk.
